Are you heading to SQLRally in May? If so, make sure you check out the SQLKaraoke event. Last year, a couple unnamed people managed to blow the fuse for the entire block in the middle of song from our group. This will be a good opportunity to get out and experience what happens when people let loose and enjoy a few songs.

SQL Karaoke – MVP Style

As is typical when a bunch of SQL Server Professionals get together, karaoke is happening. When? RIGHT NOW! The MVPs have gathered in Seattle for their Summit. They are having a huge party at the CenturyLink Field. Part of this party includes SQLRockaroke. I am watching the posts and pictures on Twitter, and it looks like they are singing karaoke to a live band. Jason Strate (@StrateSQL) and Jorge Segarra (@SQLChicken) kicked it off. I don’t know any more details, but I’m sure Jason will write about it later!

BTW – There are rumors that the crew may or may not be going to Bush Gardens later.

Karaoke Sighting at SQL In The City

Sometime last week an e-mail slipped into my mailbox… looks like the SQL in the City event in L.A. included some karaoke madness. This in turn led to some video taping and the obligatory upload to YouTube.

I was also stunned to find out that aren’t that many karaoke bars in the UK which is quite sad. I feel as though we should have more SQL Server conferences on the other side of the pond and bring our karaoke machines with us.

Two More Videos From Last Night’s Adventure

Got through all of the videos and permission came back to post a couple more video. The first one is Jason Strate (blog | @stratesql) and Jes Schultz Borland (Blog | @grrl_geek) singing the old standard “Paradise By The Dashboard Lights”.

Next is Jason again singing another rendition of “Blue”.

Of course, it is easy to approve my own videos. I’m working on getting more up and should have more soon.

“Unofficial” SQLKaraoke From Monday

The official SQLKaraoke event is planned for Wednesday, but that didn’t stop about 40 people from cabbing down to Bush Gardens last night. There were songs, friends, long islands, and laughter to fill the entire venue.

We found out a new Bush Gardens pro tip last night. It turns out the KJ has more than 1,000 songs available that are not listed in the books. When you come out on other unofficial or official nights, bring your thinking cap and creativity because the song you want he probably has.

Here’s the first video from Monday. There are others, but I am awaiting permission from the singers before posting them. Of course, I approve all video taken of myself, usually. It’s me singing Cecilia in the tune of SQL but with no preparation.

Pro tip #2 for this post – chances are that even tonight on yet another non-SQL Karaoke night that some of us will be at Bush Gardens.

SQLKaraoke at the PASS Summit

It’s just two more weeks until the PASS Summit. If you’ve been living under a box, you might not have heard about SQL Karaoke. So, if that’s you, let’s break it all down.

The Movement

A few years back Kathi Kellenberger (Blog | @auntkathi) took Thomas LaRock (Blog | @SQLRockstar) out for a little karaoke. There were probably others there too, but those two were at the beginning. Karaoke always involves singing, some good and some bad (duh). Usually drinks are involved too. The drinking and singing (of questionable quality) inspired others to join. SQLKaraoke was born.

Now whenever people get together at SQL events, and there is a little karaoke, we call it SQLKaraoke. During some of these events, people have recorded the songs and jotted down notes on the occurrence. That’s where this site comes in, seeing a need to collect this stuff for posterity (mild embarrassment). Www.sqlkaraoke.com is a place to collect what has transpired (provided people approve their videos).

The Event

At the PASS Summit there is always an official SQLKaraoke night. This helps people know when the best and the worst of humanity can be found at PASS. This year, SQLKaraoke is on Wednesday, October 12 at 9:30 PM.

As it has been for the past few years, SQLKaraoke is happening at Bush Gardens.

This quaint establishment features a great KJ and good drinks. The place is small so come early and reserve yourself a seat. By 10 PM, expect the establishment to be standing room only. The KJ also works for tips, so please be as gracious to him as he’s going to be to us.

As has happened the last couple years, the master of ceremonies for SQLKaraoke will be Denny Cherry (Blog | @MrDenny). Really all that means is he’s running the train, which means saying, “Let’s go!” loudly, to get people down to Bush Gardens. As an added bonus, Denny has arranged to get two drink sponsors for the event. The companies NEC and Genesis Hosting Solutions have offered to open the bar to those that have SQLKaraoke wristbands. For information on obtaining a wristband, that falls into Denny’s lap – he’s the gatekeeper.

The drink wristbands have no effect on being able to get into Bush Gardens, they only bestow special drinking privileges for the night.

The Also Happening

SQLKaraoke isn’t just a one time event at the PASS Summit. If you miss the first day, there will inevitably be opportunities to join in on nights before and after the official event. Don’t be afraid to join. Throw up the hashtag like a gang sign and find out who is with you.

Hangin’ With the Cool Kids

One of the perks of attending after hours events such as SQLKaraoke, is getting to hang out with all the cool kids! You will find MVP’s such as Jason Strate (@StrateSQL), Ted Krueger (@onpnt), Jen and Sean McCown (@midnightDBA), Tom LaRock (@SQLRockstar), Tim Mitchell (@Tim_Mitchell), Jorge Segarra (@sqlchicken), Rick Heiges (@heigesr2), Grant Fritchey (@GFritchey), Bill Graziano (@billgraziano) and possibly others I forgot. ~~Please, don’t strike me down if I missed you!~~ You also get a chance to hang out with MCM Denny Cherry (@mrdenny) (though, I’ve heard others may make an appearance too). There are also some really cool Microsoft people like Kathi Kellenberger (@auntkathi), la madre de sqlkaraoke, who are regulars at sqlkaraoke night too. What’s not to love about that list of awesome SQL Peeps?
